Southern Dictionary: High Falutin’ September 11, 2008Posted by smooregasbord in Around Town, General.
High falutin’ is typically defined as being a show-off or egotistical or living beyond one’s means. Southerners don’t really give two hoots about the technical definition. We tend to use a more loose interpretation which includes terms like fancy pants or hoity toity.
This past Sunday I was able to have afternoon tea at the Ritz with several girlfriends. It isn’t very often that I get to experience this kind of first-class treatment. Having tea at the Ritz was one of those moments where I totally felt high falutin’ and, boy, was it fun. You know, like one of those scenes out of Pretty Woman…except I’m usually the one to flip escargot on the maître d’ or sit on the edge of the table while eating breakfast with my hands! Oh, my parents would be so proud, “Why, yes, we did raise Susan in a barn!”
