oktapodiSince the Oscar’s are tonight, I thought I’d do a related post. Up for nomination in the cateogory of Best Animated Short is Oktapodi. I saw this short today for the very first time and fell instantly in love. It’s a story about two octopi, young and in love, who become separated when a chef purchases one of them. The other goes to the rescue of his beloved and adventure ensues. The animation and colors are amazing and the setting is ranked among one of the top five places that I’d like to visit someday: the Mykonos. It’s a charming short that will make you smile well past the story’s ending.

SS_pillowI’ve already mentioned how much I love silhouettes, so it makes me very happy to see them making a big comeback. I came across a site called Simply Silhouettes and they add this timeless profile to everything from jewelry to stationary to pillows. Heck, they’ll even do your ultrasound image. The throw pillows and playing cards are pretty cute, and I even find myself drawn to the necklaces and t-shirts.

What do eukaryotes, protozoa, and amoebas have in common besides reminding me of freshman year as a biology major?! Well, when made out of glass with sterling silver accents, they all become beautiful jewelry. Check out the Starving Artist Bazaar to see all of the unique designs. The amoebas are my favorite, especially the earrings! You can see additional designs at Sighfoo’s Etsy shop including the layered amoeba necklaces.

Mixed Glass EarringsDuring a recent online shopping adventure, I came across an Etsy shop called Bottled Up Designs. Living in Pennsylvania, Laura Bergman has found a new purpose for old glass. Her creations range from earrings and necklaces to candle holders and ornaments. Each of her pieces has a story behind it such as where the glass came from and how it was previously used. Can you think of a more beautiful way to help our environment?! She certainly puts new meaning behind the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle).

Karl Double SilhouetteI enjoy watching the various segments shown on the CBS Sunday Morning Show.  A while back they did a segment on The Return of the Silhouetteand I was absolutely caught up by the classic look. A little later I saw them talked about again in a magazine, so I did a little internet search and came across the artist, Karl Johnson. His work is quite impressive and completely done by hand. So for Christmas this year, we thought it would make a wonderful gift for my mother-in-law. We had double silhouettes done of each set of grandchildren, and they turned out absolutely beautiful! Lauren, Karl’s wife, was truly a delight to work with from the beginning to the end (when I needed a last minute upgrade on my shipping). I think this is a unique way to create a family heirloom to be passed down from generation to generation…and expanded as your family grows. He also does custom orders, like full silhouettes of wedding couples and pets. If you’re pregnant, what a great idea to have your “baby bump” transferred to a silhouette.

As previously promised, here is a picture of our gingerbread house this year.
These photos were taken mere hours before PukeFest 2007 commenced!
With that, please enjoy our gingerbread cottage complete with coffee bean roof and graham cracker porch.

Well, I have made yet another Etsy purchase…only this time it was a gift for myself. I just couldn’t resist!! I’ve been eyeing a print (maybe several) on Cathy Nichols’ Etsy page. Then I noticed my “favorite” was sold. NO!! I immediately sent her a convo, and she was able to put another copy of the print in her store for me to purchase. I can now breathe a sigh of relief. However, what am I going to do about all of her other prints that I’m craving?!?! Keep eyeing and buying, I guess.
